Windows Server 2008 Standard
If you purchased a retail copy of Windows 7, chances are your installation disc didn’t come with SP1 included. That means if you want to reinstall Windows 7 at a later date you’ll have to reinstall from the disc, then download all of those updates again, a time-consuming and frustrating process. Hi Paige, From your description, you want to upgrade Windows Server 2008 Standard to Windows Server 2008 Enterprise and have license issues about upgrade, right? If so, please post the question in Windows Server forums to get dedicated support. I inherited a Windows 2003 Domain with an Exchange 2010 server built on Windows Server 2008 Standard (standalone server). I've recently discovered that we actually have the licensing for Windows Server 2008 R2. Run Your Mission-Critical Apps on Windows Server 2008. Business apps such as accounting can be accessed in the cloud. No re-architecture required.
Windows 2008 R2 Standard can use a maximum of 4 CPUs (sockets), each socketed CPU can have multiple cores, and it can use them (up to a maximum of 256 cores total). References: • for a full list. • VMWare's assigned CPUs count as actual CPUs (sockets), so Windows 2008 R2 Standard can't/won't use the additional 4 CPUs. If your version of VMware supports it, assign 4 CPUs with 2 cores each instead, and Windows will see/use 8 logical CPUs. From VMware: VMware multicore virtual CPU support lets you control the number of cores per virtual socket in a virtual machine. This capability lets operating systems with socket restrictions use more of the host CPU's cores, which increases overall performance. More info from VMware.
